ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
Both these vineyards were planted by Bernhard Bredell’s grandfather in the 70's. He firmly believed in sustainable viticulture and dry farming with mindfulness towards soilcare. With green manure (Cover crops since day 1) in the rows in the off-season and only adding livestock/poultry manure as fertilizer when needed. The winemaker also grew up learning from his grandfather from the early age of 4y old, always tagging along with him. These are the closest Pinotage and Cinsaut vineyards to the ocean in South Africa (possibly Africa as a continent), 3-4km proximity from the South Atlantic, which play an immense role in the vines' flavor development and ripening period. He leases demarcated portions in these vineyards today and has input in farming them sustainably every year. Bredell’s grandfather passed away a few years ago, but working with the vines he cared for and developed for over 40 years is extremely special to him and inspires him daily. The vineyards that stood on the same soils before these, his grandfather’s grandfather planted, and he also farmed with them as he does now. Bredell has a profound connection with his vines and sites.
