Merumalia, an organic winery in the Italian region of Lazio, prioritizes sustainability in every aspect of its operations. Powering their heating systems and winery operations with solar panels, recycling vine and olive tree prunings as a fuel source, and using sustainable, recycled and light-weight packaging to reduce their carbon footprint are just a few of the many ways Merumalia strives to preserve and protect the land. Giulia Fusco, now at the helm, is taking the winery in a new fresh direction.

ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

At Merumalia, they feel responsible for preserving the landscape, its environment, its history, and the local community traditions. Respect for the heritage guides our plans for agricultural wine production, quality, and distinction through hard work and intelligent, ethical business practices. They spread the love for their land in every single activity, including the hospitality and experiential wine tours.

The microclimate of the North-NorthEast hills of a volcano that overlooks the Lago Regillo (one of the external craters of Grande Vulcano Laziale) helps us with pleasant thermal excursions. They have to be grateful for the morphology of our land, which shows beautiful basaltic rock layers and is very rich in potassium.

The hot water used for heating and winery operations is produced through photothermal panels combined with a biomass boiler (the fuel is wooden chips made by vines and olive tree prunings). The summer cooling system is based on a heat pump. A computer controls this integrated energy system to optimize the use of fuel.

All Merumalia products are certified to be Organic, i.e., they are produced without pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or synthetic plant protection products, as these products will stay for the long term in the field.
