Wine for the World

Scions of Sinai Atlantikas

This boutique Stellenbosch winery (> 900 cs/yr) focuses on Rhone varietals and is 3 km from the Atlantic Ocean. Rare for the area, Winemaker Bernhard Bredell focuses on purity, and follows organic, dry farming, with minimal intervention practices. His vision is to restore his seven-generation wine farming roots, sustainably.

Atlantikas was born after an otherwise healthy and well situated old bushvine vineyard came under the crosshairs to be pulled out. This is a 1976 dryland farmed vineyard situated in sand soils (of decomposed granite and silica) in the Lower Helderberg sub-region of Stellenbosch. I value its authenticity and the combination of factors making this Pinotage vineyard quite different from the norm. Hence, I offered to claim the majority of the grapes from this vineyard and find a home that could in turn help plough back care into this vineyard for the future. A daring task, but that is exactly agriculture in its essence. A commitment towards the hope for this old bushvine vineyard.

From a 1976 old bushvine single vineyard, dry farmed since 1975. Known as the closest Pinotage vineyard towards the Atlantic Ocean in our Cape Winelands (hence, the name). I value its authenticity and the combination of factors making this Pinotage vineyard quite diff erent from the norm, not just for this close maritime proximity, but also the gnarled old vines with deep roots and the poor sand soils (definitely not a custom for Pinotage and quite rare to find this combo of all the factors on thisvariety in SA), delivering delicate and tiny flavor packed bunches. Mindfully minimalistic agriculture in the vineyard till now, with the aim to invest over the next few years into a more organic approach to improve vitality. The Atlantic Ocean plays a huge role in shaping these grapes to attain their unique natural flavor and well-kept acidity (especially on Pinotage).

Pairings
Grilled or slow-cooked sausages, beef, and lamb all do a great job of bringing out the sweeter notes of Pinotage. Gamey meats are also a great companion to this wine. Venison and oxtail will pair well with the savoury notes of Pinotage. Lighter styled tappas with some textured foods will fit well with this fine acidity and tannin crunch.
