One of our newest winery partners, La Costa Fattoria Sociale, produces unique Italian wines from the Breganze DOC in the Veneto. Breganze is the fourth oldest DOC in this area of Italy, dating back to 1969. When their son was diagnosed with a disability, the winery owners decided to create a “social farm” that supports refugees, those with emotional and physical disabilities, homeless and unemployed individuals, and those who suffer from substance addiction, by providing employment and housing at the winery, social and psychological services, and training. Medical and social service professionals visit the winery weekly to assess the needs of the beneficiaries. In addition to working at the winery, the beneficiaries contribute by creating and hand-painting the wine labels. Everyone plays an integral role and all benefit from La Costa’s commitment to the well-being of others. In addition, La Costa farms organically and employs some biodynamic practices, including a summer solstice celebration; they even serenade the vines by playing music in the vineyard! The winery is self-sustainable, using solar panels for energy, capturing rainwater for irrigation and having their sheep manage vegetation growth. These truly delicious, top-quality (and vegan) wines can be enjoyed both alone and with a variety of foods. La Costa’s offerings include a Vespaiolo (white), a Gropello (red), a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Pet Nat. These are bright, fun, terrific warm weather wines that also make a true impact.
